What is a residential proxy?

A residential proxy sends your requests out through an IP address that an internet provider assigned to someone's home connection.

Also called residential IP.

To the site you visit, the request looks like it came from a household on consumer broadband. Sites are careful with those addresses, because blocking one can mean blocking a paying customer.

The home connections belong to people who agreed to share spare bandwidth, usually through an app that pays them. That bandwidth has a cost per gigabyte, which is why residential is billed by traffic and costs more per GB than the other proxy types.

Residential pools are usually rotating: you connect to one gateway and each request can leave from a different home.

For example

Your price tracker works from your laptop but gets a 403 the moment you run it on a cheap VPS. The shop is blocking hosting-company addresses. Put the same script behind a residential proxy and its requests look like home traffic again.

How it works at ProxyMonkey

  • Billed per GB, pay as you go, with no plan and no term. We bill request bytes plus response bytes, including headers and protocol overhead on the tunnelled connection.
  • The pool covers 180+ countries, but you cannot choose one: each request exits wherever the next IP happens to be. If you need a named country, ISP and datacenter let you pick one at checkout.
  • The IPs come from an opt-in SDK partner whose users are paid for their bandwidth. Ask in Discord and we will name the partner.
