What is a datacenter proxy?

A datacenter proxy is an IP address owned by a hosting or cloud company and served from a server in a rack.

Nothing about it is borrowed. The bandwidth is wholesale and the server is always on, so datacenter IPs are the fastest and cheapest to run. The catch is that any site can look up the ASN, see a hosting company, and guess there is no person behind it.

Some sites block hosting ranges on sight. Most APIs, content sites and public price feeds do not, and for those a datacenter IP is the cheapest way to run a big crawl. Test your targets before assuming you need residential.

For example

Your Scrapy spider pulls a few hundred thousand product pages a week from a shop that has never blocked anything. Two dedicated datacenter IPs do the job for a flat fee each, where residential would bill every byte.
