What is a backconnect gateway?

A backconnect gateway is one proxy host and port that forwards each of your connections to one of many exit IPs behind it.

Also called backconnect proxy or rotating gateway.

You never handle the pool. You connect to the gateway, authenticate, and it picks an exit for you: a new one per connection for rotation, or the same one for a sticky session.

The IP a target sees is the exit, never the gateway. Asking an IP echo service such as httpbin.org/ip through the gateway shows the exit address, which is the quickest way to check rotation is working.

A 502 Bad Gateway through one of these usually means the exit failed to reach the target, so a retry goes out through a different IP.

For example

Without a gateway you keep a text file of 500 IP:PORT lines and write code to cycle through them and drop the dead ones. With a gateway, the whole list is one line of config.

How it works at ProxyMonkey

  • Residential runs through one gateway, resi.proxymonkey.io:8000, with the username and password from your dashboard.
  • ISP and datacenter have no gateway. Each IP you rent is its own endpoint, listed in the dashboard with its port and credentials.
