What is proxy authentication?

Proxy authentication is how a proxy checks a connection is yours, usually with a username and password or by recognising your IP address.

Proxy authentication explained

With a username and password, your client sends the credentials to the proxy in a Proxy-Authorization header. The target never sees them. Most tools accept them inside the proxy URL, as http://USER:PASS@host:port.

Wrong or missing credentials get a 407 Proxy Authentication Required. The usual culprit is a password containing @, : or #, which breaks the URL. Percent-encode those characters, or pass the credentials separately.

Chrome's --proxy-server flag ignores credentials in the URL. That is why Puppeteer has page.authenticate() and Playwright takes the username and password as separate options.

For example

Your password ends in #1. Pasted into the proxy URL, everything after the # is read as a fragment and the proxy answers 407. Passing it with --proxy-user avoids the parsing.
