What is proxy IP whitelisting?

IP whitelisting lets a proxy accept connections from your server's IP address without asking for a username and password.

Also called IP allowlist.

You register the public IP of the machine that runs your scraper, and the proxy accepts any connection from it. It suits tools that cannot send proxy credentials, and it keeps passwords out of config files and shell history.

It only works while your IP stays put. Home broadband, laptops on café Wi-Fi and CI runners change address, and every request fails until you update the list. Anyone else behind the same public IP, such as the rest of a shared office network, can use your proxy too.

For example

Your scraper runs on a VPS with a fixed IP. Allowlist that IP and the Selenium setup shrinks to a bare --proxy-server=host:port, with no auth extension to install.
