What is a user agent?

The user agent is the User-Agent request header, in which a client names itself: a browser and its version, or an HTTP library.

Libraries announce themselves by default: python-requests/2.x, curl/8.x, Go-http-client/1.1. Many sites reject those strings outright, and no proxy changes that, because the header travels inside your request.

Sending a real browser user agent helps only if the rest of the request matches. A Chrome user agent without Chrome's other headers stands out, and so does a new user agent on every request from one IP and one cookie jar.

For example

Your scraper gets a 403 through every proxy you try, residential included. Print the headers you send: python-requests/2.x is enough for many sites to refuse you before the IP is even considered.
