Tixati proxy settings: peers yes, DHT never

Point Tixati’s trackers and peers at a SOCKS5 proxy, why its DHT always goes direct and must be switched off, and how to check the bandwidth it costs you.

Tixati proxy settings fit in one sentence, and Tixati wrote it: a proxy “can be used for tracker, peer, or both types of connections. It is not possible to use a proxy for DHT UDP packets”. Read the second half twice. Whatever you put in the proxy box, Tixati’s DHT talks to the world from your real IP. So this setup has two halves: point trackers and peers at the proxy, then switch DHT off.

Checked against Tixati’s proxy help page and release news (version 3.44, 21 June 2026) in October 2026.

Tixati in thirty seconds

Free, no ads (“Contains NO Spyware and NO Ads”, says the site), its own engine, and runs on Windows, Linux and Android, not macOS. Its party trick is detail: per-peer and bandwidth views that most clients do not bother with. Version 3.43 brought major DHT changes, which is nice for the swarm and irrelevant to the proxy, since DHT never goes through one.

The limits on our side

  • Treat our SOCKS5 as TCP only. UDP relay is not verified on our gateways, so UDP trackers and uTP will not work through us either. HTTP proxies never carry UDP.
  • Seeding pays both ways on a per-GB line: residential, and anything past a shared IP’s allowance. The metering explainer has the rule.
  • No encryption. Changing the IP is all a proxy does.
  • DHT is not the only way around it. Anything sent outside the proxy carries your real IP. For copyright-type risk, qBittorrent’s wiki points people to a VPN; see proxy vs VPN.
  • Lawful files only. Using our proxies to share files you have no right to share is not allowed, per the acceptable use policy.

Half one: trackers and peers through the proxy

  1. Open Tixati’s settings and go to Network > Proxy. The help page is titled “Settings - Network - Proxy”.
  2. Pick SOCKS5. Tixati also takes SOCKS4, 4a and HTTP.
  3. Enter the proxy IP and port from your dashboard.
  4. Apply it to both tracker and peer connections. Tracker-only is cheap and changes nothing for peers.
  5. Credentials are not covered by Tixati’s help, so we cannot point at the fields. If there are none, put your own IP on the order’s IP allowlist.

Half two: switch DHT off

DHT is how a client finds peers without a tracker, and it runs over UDP. Tixati cannot proxy it, so with DHT on, the DHT nodes you talk to see your home IP no matter how carefully you filled in the proxy page. Find DHT in Tixati’s settings and disable it while the proxy is on.

Two rows say “not documented” because Tixati’s help does not cover them. Assume direct until you have checked.

The cost of DHT off: fewer peers, and torrents that only find peers through DHT will not start. Pick torrents with http:// or https:// trackers, and confirm what the tracker sees with a tracker-based IP check, a test torrent whose tracker echoes back the address it saw.

Read the meter with Tixati’s own charts

Tixati’s detailed bandwidth views make it the easiest client in this series to audit. Its own numbers are your counter; our dashboard is the bill. Line them up.

A 5 GB ISO, peers proxied, seeded to 1.0: at least 10 GB through the proxy. On residential the smallest order covering it is 10 GB, which costs $39.50. A dedicated datacenter IP is $1.90 for 30 days with no traffic meter. More threads on that order are a paid add-on, so match Tixati’s connection count to what you bought. P2P is fine on our residential IPs and on dedicated IPs with no traffic meter, as long as what you share is lawful.

  1. Note Tixati’s upload and download totals for the test window.
  2. Export the same window from the usage view in your dashboard as CSV.
  3. Diff them. A few percent of overhead is expected. If our side is well above yours, the honesty page says we credit the difference, and the bill audit guide shows how to make the case.

Keep the upload on a budget

Because Tixati shows upload per peer, you can see exactly where the paid bytes go. Set a global upload cap and a ratio at which seeding stops, before the download completes. If the proxy was only for the download, turn it off afterwards and seed the public ISO from your own line: the upload then costs nothing on our meter, and DHT can come back on.

Verdict

Tixati is a good proxy client with one documented hole, and the hole has an off switch. For one ISO, still go direct; DHT on, full speed, nothing to pay. When Tixati genuinely needs another IP or country, use SOCKS5 for trackers and peers, DHT off, a dedicated datacenter IP rather than per-GB residential, and its charts as your meter. If you are comparing, the BitComet guide covers the other client with separate tracker and peer switches.

Quick answers

Can Tixati send DHT through a proxy?

No. Tixati’s own help says "It is not possible to use a proxy for DHT UDP packets." If the proxy is there to stand in for your IP, switch DHT off while it is on.

Does Tixati support a SOCKS5 proxy with a username and password?

Tixati’s help lists SOCKS4, 4a, 5 and HTTP, and says nothing about authentication, so we could not confirm it. If your version has no credential fields, add your own IP to the order’s allowlist so the proxy needs no password.

Why do I get fewer incoming connections behind the proxy?

Tixati warns that "using a proxy for peers may prevent incoming connections from being received". Peers cannot reach you through the proxy, so you rely on the ones that accept your connections.

Is there a Tixati for Mac?

No. Tixati lists Windows, Linux and Android.

Try it while you read

Top-ups start at $5.

One shared datacenter IP for 30 days is $1.25. A single gigabyte of residential is $5.50. The balance never expires.
