WebTorrent Desktop and proxies: there is no setting, so here is the plan

WebTorrent Desktop has no proxy setting. What that means for your IP and the meter, why its WebRTC peers matter, and which client to use for a proxy.

WebTorrent Desktop proxy settings: there aren’t any. The client’s source shows its preferences page has exactly five sections, Folders, Playback, Default torrent app, General and Trackers, and no proxy field in any of them. Whether any of its traffic follows your system proxy, we could not confirm, so treat it as not proxied at all. Here is what that means for you, for our meter, and what to use when you genuinely need a proxy.

Checked against the WebTorrent Desktop preferences source and its releases in October 2026. Short, because there is nothing to configure.

What WebTorrent Desktop is good at

Streaming. It plays a torrent while it downloads, and it can talk to browser-based WebRTC peers as well as ordinary BitTorrent ones. That makes it a lovely way to watch Creative Commons films and public-domain video: the Blender open movies, Internet Archive collections. It is MIT-licensed, runs on Mac, Windows and Linux, and its last release, v0.24.0, came out on 29 August 2020. Since then the repository has seen dependency bumps and little else.

Why there is nothing to set

No proxy field means no peer proxying, no tracker proxying, nothing. Every peer sees your real IP. And WebRTC connections are designed to find the most direct route between two peers, which is the same behaviour that makes browsers leak addresses; the WebRTC leak entry explains it.

The usual fine print, for completeness, and for when you switch:

  • On our per-GB lines, residential and traffic past a shared IP’s allowance, a torrent you seed through a proxied client pays both ways. The metering explainer has the rule.
  • Treat our SOCKS5 as TCP only. UDP relay is unverified on our gateways, so DHT, UDP trackers and uTP will not work through us, and an HTTP proxy cannot carry UDP anywhere.
  • A proxy does not encrypt. Anything outside it shows your real IP.
  • For copyright-type worries, qBittorrent’s wiki points to a VPN; see proxy vs VPN.
  • Using our proxies to share files you have no right to share is not allowed. The acceptable use policy has the line.

Read the meter: zero is the right answer

WebTorrent Desktop never touches our proxy, so it never touches our meter. That gives you a free sanity check. If it is the only torrent app you run and the usage view in your dashboard is climbing, something else is using your proxy credentials. Go and find it before it finds your balance.

If you move the same stream to a client that proxies peers, the meter wakes up. A 1.2 GB open movie, seeded back to 0.5 while you watch, needs a residential order of $10.40. The bandwidth calculator will tell you when a flat-priced IP is cheaper for your habits. P2P is fine on our residential IPs and on dedicated IPs with no traffic meter, as long as what you share is lawful.

If you need a proxy: switch clients

Pick a client that documents its proxy behaviour, let it download the file, then play it. BiglyBT names every proxy label and the features that leak; the BiglyBT guide walks through them. qBittorrent has the deepest controls, with one checkbox everyone misses; the qBittorrent guide covers it.

Verdict

For public-domain streams, WebTorrent Desktop on your own connection is fine, and it costs nothing on any proxy meter. When the connection must come from another IP, WebTorrent Desktop is the wrong tool, and no setting will change that. Also weigh the age: a client with no release since 2020 is a choice, not a default.

Quick answers

Does WebTorrent Desktop have proxy settings?

No. Its preferences page has five sections, Folders, Playback, Default torrent app, General and Trackers, and none of them is a proxy setting.

Does WebTorrent Desktop use the system proxy?

We could not confirm that any of its traffic honours a system proxy, so treat it as not proxied: every connection leaves from your real IP.

Is WebTorrent Desktop still updated?

Its last release is v0.24.0, from 29 August 2020. The repository has had only dependency bumps since, the most recent in July 2026.

How do I stream a torrent through a proxy, then?

Use a client with documented proxy settings and let it download the file, then play it. Through a per-GB proxy, budget for the file plus whatever you seed back.

Try it while you read

Top-ups start at $5.

One shared datacenter IP for 30 days is $1.25. A single gigabyte of residential is $5.50. The balance never expires.
